This narrow-gauge track connected Beirut to Damascus, covering 147 kilometres and scaling the steep Anti-Lebanon mountains. Increased car ownership during the 1960s reduced the popularity of rail travel. The Lebanese civil war delivered the final blow to the remaining routes as fighting damaged tracks and military forces occupied the maintenance depots. Most train services stopped operating by 1978, and the final locomotive retired from the tracks in 1990.
